Stephen creates exquisite drawings through a meticulous process of layering marks on paper, perspex and card. He is inspired by architecture and creates unique interpretations of buildings and cityscapes. Stephen uses pen and ink to create weaving surface patterns and sophisticated gridded surfaces. Stephen works methodically, with deep concentration and an impressive awareness of the whole picture plane, large or small.
Stephen says ‘I love to paint!’. Stephen’s recent paintings are built with broad planes of colour, to create carefully considered abstract compositions.
Stephen has exhibited extensively including: Kilkenny Arts Festival, Cork Community Print Shop, Gallerie Outsider Art, Amsterdam, Cork Coffee Roasters, Boyle Arts Festival, Roscommon, Courthouse Arts Centre, Wicklow, Crawford Art Gallery, Southbank Arts Centre, London, Galway Arts Centre, Arts and Minds Canberra Australia, HAI New York, Paul Bardwell Gallery of Contemporary Art, Colombia, Kinsale Arts Festival, Sirius Art Centre Cobh, Jennings Gallery, University College Cork. Stephen Murray was employed as artist in residence at Mayfield Arts Centre for over a decade, as part of Cúig Studio programme.
